"Rose Weasley!"

The girl who had been called trembled as she made her way to the sorting hat. I heard Weasley and immediately I had to look to make sure I could avoid her at all costs, like Daddy said to. Even if she ended up being a Slytherin, which Daddy said would be next to impossible.

But when I saw her, I couldn't think of her as the "revolting spawn of Weasley." Her hair was much, much too soft and her face much, much too fair for me to think of her as the enemy.

I saw her look up at me for a split second before the hat fell over her eyes, and I could have sworn I saw a shimmer in those endearing blue eyes. It wasn't a shimmer of hatred or disgust, no. It was a shimmer I had never seen or heard of. It melted my insides, and I was suddenly worried for my health.

When the hat bellowed the result of her sorting, I heaved a disappointed sigh. Of course, she was a Gryffindor. What was worse is what Daddy said about how Harry Potter's son, Albus, was to be starting at Hogwarts too. He had been sorted shortly after I was, and he was sorted into Slytherin, like me.

And he had the gall to sit right next to me.

And he dared to speak to me right after I suffered the disappointment of the Weasley girl being sorted into Gryffindor.

"That's my cousin, Rosie. She is really smart, like my Aunt Hermione. That's her mom."

Great. More bad news. Daddy hadn't told me that my enemies were related to each other. I guess he didn't know, or something. Oh well. What better way to get to know the Weasley girl than to befriend her cousin? And an added bonus, I could keep tabs on the Potter boy.

"Oh really? That's pretty cool. Hey, I didn't catch your name when you were being sorted. Could you tell me what it is?"

"Sure. I'm Albus. Albus Potter. What's your name?"

I could see that he was willing to become my friend. Good. "My name is Scorpius Malfoy."

His eyes widened. "Really? My dad knows your dad!" Of course he did. "He talks about him sometimes. About how he was forced against his will to work for some evil guy, and he was brave enough to do the right thing and help him and my aunt Hermione and uncle Ron when they were in trouble."

That was quite unexpected. My daddy always spoke of Harry Potter as a good-for-nothing man with no bravery or honor to his name. Though he did speak of a time when he had to 'Get his sorry arse out of a sticky situation' at one point, he didn't say anything about Harry Potter thanking him for it.

"My dad sometimes talks about your dad too. About how he killed that evil guy." I thought it would be a good idea not to mention that my dad had wanted to do it himself and hated Mr. Potter for taking his glory.

Albus smiled. He looked so childish. "So I guess we're roommates, right? Since we are both Slytherin first years?"

"I think so…" I was rudely interrupted by Headmistress McGonagall, who had started to give her welcome to the new students, and laying down the law and crap. When she was done, I had forgotten what we had been talking about. Mostly because of the mountain of food that appeared on the table in front of me.

I looked up and down the Slytherin table at the other students. Of the many things Daddy and Grandfather said about the House, they mentioned that most of my classmates would be ignorant toad-faced slobs. I was relieved to discover that they were wrong. They all were well-mannered, using their eating utensils properly, although they had no problem eating as much as possible. Even Albus proved to be high-class.

***

After having gotten past the first few months of school, Albus and I got to know each other very well. It was nearly Winter Holiday, so both of us were going home for Christmas. We exchanged phone numbers, which only the cool rich wizard kids had, so we could talk while separated.

I still didn't consider him a close friend, though, because Daddy didn't want me to be anywhere near him or his family. But I was really close to calling him my best friend.

I had yet to talk to Rose, the pretty girl I wanted to befriend so badly. She and Albus may have been cousins, but since they were in different Houses, they didn't see each other much. Which meant I didn't see her much either.

I promised myself that I would try to talk to her after the holiday.

***

"Can you believe it Scor? It's the last day of our first year at Hogwarts!"

A short time ago, I wouldn't have believed it, but exams were over, and we both made it through with top marks. I also wouldn't have believed that Albus would have become such a close friend that we would use nicknames for each other.

"Not at all, Al, but it is, isn't it? Are you packed yet?"

By Albus' expression, the answer was no. "Well, not quite. All I need to do is pack my clothes, my toothbrush and toothpaste, and find my other quaffle sock that I lost ages ago."

I, on the other hand, had been packed for the past week. The only things I had yet to pack were the clothes I was wearing. I brought my laundry to the house elves every night so I could wear them every day and not have to unpack. As for toothbrush and toothpaste, I found a spell that cleaned my teeth without them, so they were packed too.

"I'm all packed, so I will help you find your sock, but I'm not helping you pack your clothes, because I don't know how you want to handle that."

"Thanks Scor!"

It took hours for Albus to finish packing, because it was really hard to find his sock. I found it under his mattress. I had no idea how it could possibly have gotten there. Once we were done, we grabbed lunch at the Great Hall, and ate it under a beech tree by the Black Lake.

Out of nowhere, Rose came running to us. "Hey, Al! Hello, Scorpius!" The voice of an angel. And she was talking to me for the first time! "Mind if I eat with you?"
Albus made a big smile. "Not at all, Rosie! There's plenty of room under this huge tree. Right, Scor?"

Nervous, I became embarrassingly formal. "Oh yes. Please join us."

Rose sat down between us, and I caught a whiff of a wonderful homemade bread smell with a hint of honey. I looked at her food, and there was no trace of bread or honey on her plate. I concluded it was her. Yet another trait about her that attracted me.
When she was done eating, Rose sighed and laid down by the lake, and invited Albus and I to join her. "What a beautiful day. This is a great way to finish off our first year, eh Al?"

"Uh huh. No clouds in the sky, and it's a cozy eighty degrees out."

"Yep." Rose looked up at the cloudless sky, then sat up and looked at Albus. Obviously, she was too shy to talk to me directly. "Hey, do you guys want to go for a swim in the lake?"

Albus's face lit up. "Sure! Hey, Scor, let's go get dressed!"

"O-okay." I wasn't comfortable with exposing myself in front of Rose, because I wasn't very well-toned. Daddy couldn't persuade the school board to let me have my own gym. Nevertheless, I went with it, and when we got back, Rose wasn't there yet, so we waited.

Rose didn't take much longer after we arrived at the lake to join us. She wore a modest one-piece swimsuit, and she had taken her crimson hair out of its usual ponytail.

We all eagerly cannonballed into the lake, accompanied by several other students. It seemed like the entire school wanted to do a mass jump into the lake. When I surfaced, I saw Rose a few feet away, the tight curls in her hair slightly straightened by the weight of the water.

It might sound odd, but that moment was the start of our trio. Rose, Albus, and I.
EDIT: Oh my goodness, I've come a long way since I wrote this chapter! Sorry for how much this one sucks, but I promise to everyone that it gets better!

I've decided to enter ONLY chapter 1 in a contest!
Here's the stuff they need for me to say:
